Level 4 and 5 qualifications (Foundation Degree or HND) and 260 UCAS tariff points. All courses require 5 GCSEs at A-C including Maths and English.

The financial services sectors play a large part in the British economy. In fact, business wouldn’t happen without them. Coventry University College offers a range of courses focused on the wider financial services sector. They have been designed to provide a balance of academic depth and professional practice that will help you develop the knowledge and understanding necessary to operate in various sectors and at different levels within the industry. You will also have the opportunity to go onto professional accreditations.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

This course focuses strongly on developing deep knowledge and understanding of management in the wider financial environment and global and strategic leadership in the financial services sector. It covers a broad range of topics, from the decision-making processes of individual investors and borrowers to the structure and requirements of financial products, services and strategies. The course also covers the syllabus for the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning in year three of your degree.

On successful completion of the programme you should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • The structure and requirements of financial products, services and strategies – you will develop an understanding of the full range of products and services currently available to individuals and businesses including; trusts, pension products, debt investments, equities and alternative investments. You will also examine the main principles of portfolio risks and returns. This also includes CII Diploma elements: Financial Protection, Pensions and Retirement Planning;
  • Effective methods of communicating – how to communicate information about Financial Services products, services, and strategies. You will develop a critical understanding of marketing strategies related to the Financial Services industries;
  • Decision-making processes – you will look at legislation and governance as well as the CII Diploma elements: Investment Principles and Risk;]
  • The contexts in which financial services can be seen as operating– examples of contexts include the regulatory, economic, financial, demographic and social environments. At this level you will critically evaluate external environments, including the interrelated nature of environments and their impact upon the Financial Services sectors. This module also covers CII Diploma elements: Personal Taxation, Investment Principles;
  • Current technical language and practices of Financial Services in the UK – this module includes CII Diploma elements: financial planning practice, business financial planning and investment planning;
  • Alternative theoretical models – for example, alternative approaches to investment management, asset valuation, and risk management. This also includes CII Advanced Diploma elements in business financial planning and investment planning;
  • Leadership and management – you will learn the skills and competencies required in Financial Services organisations. You will also develop an understanding of the role of supervision within a regulated environment, including the characteristics and roles of a supervisor. You will develop a critical appreciation of leadership and behavioural models, including the role of compliance in the sales process, the setting and measuring of objectives, management information and quality standards as well as critically evaluating the legal and regulatory aspects of strategic leadership in Financial Services, within the European and Global context. This also includes CII Diploma elements financial services, regulation and ethics.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

This course will be taught through a variety of methods – lectures, tutorials, self-directed learning, textbooks, module webs, scenario-based learning sets, professional libraries and resources, journals and case studies, seminars, discussion forums and peer-to-peer learning.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessments will take the form of individual and group coursework, which is vocationally relevant. The wide range of assessment techniques used at Coventry University College will ensure that you have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in full.

There are no traditional final examinations to worry about. Instead, we’ll assess your learning through course work and phase tests. Assessments take place during and at the end of each six-week block.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

As a full-time student a normal learning block will mean that you get 18 hours of teaching each week in groups of approximately 25-50 students. Depending on the course you have chosen, you’ll attend morning (9.00-13.00) or afternoon (14.00-18.00) sessions. You will also need to attend one two-hour tutorial each week.
