To provide selected delegates with underpinning knowledge and practical ability to operate tugmasters safely within their working environment and to have successfully undertaken and passed the appropriate operator tests in accordance with an accrediting body recognised by the HSE, e.g. ITSSAR etc. Suitable for: Experienced no formal training. Those who have, or are required to have hands on knowledge and responsibilities involving the safe use of 'Tugmasters' used within their workplace environment from basic terminal shunting to Roll on Roll off work.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide selected delegates with underpinning knowledge and practical ability to operate tugmasters safely within their working environment and to have successfully undertaken and passed the appropriate operator tests in accordance with an accrediting body recognised by the HSE, e.g. ITSSAR etc.

Course Content / Aims and Objectives –Theory and Practical Skill Instruction

  • Trainees will have an understanding of course aims and objectives.
  • Have a clear understanding of their responsibilities under Health and Safety Law and other relevant legislation-(Theory part of training).
  • Trainees will have an understanding of the safety rules applicable to operating tugmsaters within their workplace, including traffic management procedures.
  • Rated capacity, stability and instability.
  • Control(s) familiarisation and their functions.
  • Daily pre-use checks and re-fuelling procedures.
  • Use of hydraulic fifth wheel
  • Use of gooseneck (If applicable).
  • Locking and Un-locking onto gooseneck from gooseneck stand.
  • Connecting to mafi trailers.
  • Use of reversing seat and its effect on steering.
  • Steering exercises –Forwards and Reverse Seat Steering.
  • Purpose of Red and Yellow Air Lines (Road trailers).
  • Hitching and Un-Hitching Trailers.
  • Manoeuvring exercises with trailers into trailer bays – (Open and Blind Sides).
  • Roll on Roll off work (Practical training on vessel if permitted).
  • Dangers associated with Ro-Ro working etc.
  • Pulling and Pushing up ramps on vessel.
  • Understand safety procedures applicable to double stacked containers on mafi trailers (if applicable)
  • Use of twistlocks on trailers etc.
  • Live loads-liquids / bulks etc.
  • Accidents involving tugmasters etc.
  • Practical and theory skills test.

Instructors

Courses are carried out by our fully trained and accredited instructors and the training will be of a high quality standard throughout.

Location of Training

Training to be delivered off-site depending at customer premises therefore advantageous to the trainees as the training will be specific to their workplace activities, especially where they are involved in Ro-Ro work.

Equipment

Must be in sound working order, efficient state and of good repair when being used for training and to be made available when required for the practical aspects of the training, ideally in an area away from the normal day to day work activities if feasible.

Achievement Measurement

The training is carried out in accordance with ITSSAR Accredited Standards and includes both theory and practical assessments leading to a nationally recognised qualification on successful completion as endorsed by the Health & Safety Executive.
