Course programme
The Category 3 Gas Course is for a candidate who has no relevant qualifications or experience. The Course takes three months to complete, with 2 days of in house training each fortnight enabling you to get an excellent knowledge and understanding of gas safety, flues and gas legislation. We also train operatives in appliance installation, maintenance and repair. We keep the training as practical as possible and aim to condense all theory work into bite sized chunks. In order to maximise practical training time the course is highly intensive and involves a considerable amount of guided home study throughout the course. Homework is issued along with study projects. We also offer further ongoing training upon course completion. This allows us to train our candidates not only to a very high standard for gas utilisation but also allows us to incorporate additional subjects creating a course that covers the type of training often missed on other courses.
Who does it benefit?
This course would suit anyone who is new to the industry and wishes to train to become a qualified gas engineer, or anyone wishing to return to the industry and whose ACS certificate expired more than 5 years ago.
'On Job' Training (work placement)
Candidates carry out training on site with a gas registered engineer. Early placement is essential in order to gain work based experience and portfolio completion. Placement times can vary dependent upon work types chosen, type and volume of gas work encountered and individual capability. During this period of training the candidate must complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate knowledge and experience gained.
A typical course program would be as follows: -
We begin by with an introduction to the Gas Regulations, combustion of gas and an overview of gas installations. We also cover pressure and flow; gas rates; pipe-work standard BS6891; first fix pipe-work installation; testing to IGE/UP1b and pipe-sizing calculations, burner design, ventilation, installation of flues, flueing standards, gas safety regulations, operation and testing of controls on purpose built test rigs as well as a range of different appliances. Candidates are expected to identify unsafe situations, explain corrective action and demonstrate correct disconnection of appliances. Testing of flues, report writing and documentation, Training on safe electrical isolation and electrical bonds are covered.
