Course programme

This course is suitable for both beginners looking to get started and learn the basics and for professional designers. We recommend taking it before the Two-Day Improvers Bag Making Course to have a better understanding of the principles of pattern cutting for handbag design.

The tutor will demonstrate the basics of pattern cutting and focus on the most useful techniques. By the end of the second day students will have finished a complete set of patterns for a tote bag, including handles, pockets and size variations.

Course Content:

  • Materials selection
  • Preparing to pattern cut
  • Making a working pattern for a tote bag
  • A half pattern mock up in paper
  • Net patterns for manufacture
  • Bag closures and design details for bags
  • Patterns with seam allowances

Students will leave this class with the knowledge of how to analyse a basic tote bag style into its component parts, and create patterns accordingly.

The focus is on the importance of proportion and accuracy in all aspects of the pattern cutting process, including the main body of the bag, lining, backer, collar, and gussets. You will learn how to work with a variety of materials in order to achieve a professional look to your designs.

The course fee includes all pattern making materials, such as masking tape, pattern paper, sampling fabric/leather. It’s advisable to bring an A4 sketch book and pictures or samples of bags you find interesting.

Class maximum: 6 students
