The level 2 Award in Understanding Working with People with Mental Health Issues will increase your understanding of various mental health conditions and ways to respond to these. You will also examine the distinction between mental health and mental ill-health looking at positive mental health and mental ill-health definitions; the social context for mental health including positive and negative social attitudes; the legal context and main pieces of current legislation that relate to mental health.

About this course

Define the terms mental health and mental disorder
Identify the key legislation and guidance that applies to those with mental health issues
Describe the key features of models of mental health needs and care
Explain how to support people during mental health change
Outline the types of treatment available to those experiencing mental health issues
Be more aware duty of care and dilemmas or complaints that may arise where there is a duty of care
Identify the difference between discrimination and prejudice.

The units include:

Mental health and mental health issues
Approaches to care and management in mental health
Change and support in relation to mental health
Introduction to duty of care in health, social care or children's or young people's settings
Valuing equality and diversity.

The classroom sessions are tutor led and combine group work, discussion, case studies, self-directed study, presentations, role-play, quizzes, DVD resources and research activities. You will be required to work on assignments in your own time.

This qualification will help you towards the following progression routes: Level 3 Community Mental Health Care Diploma Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care Employment in a mental health setting Specialist qualifications such as counselling.
