Introduction:
This course is an introductory Higher Education course designed to address the needs of people wishing to gain employment in the IT industry, and those already employed in the IT industry who would like to improve their skills. It also reflects the needs of employers, since the material covered is taken from the CompTIA and CISCO professional IT qualifications

Study Mode & Location:
This one module programme is studied over one evening per week for one semester (ie usually 15 weeks) and will start in September. If there is sufficient demand, we may also operate a January intake. The course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The course consists of a single module called Computer Systems Essentials (CO1555). You will learn about the basic components of a computer system, how to install, configure and upgrade both hardware and software. You will then go on to look at troubleshooting common problems.

Please Note: The entrance fee for the vendor qualification examination is not included in the University Certificate course fees.

Assessment:
The course requires you to complete two assignments. One is a time constrained practical, and the other is a case study that is designed to imitate a real life situation. At the end of the course there is a 2 hour examination.

(Note: Assessments are subject to review at UCLan quality meetings).

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This programme has been developed to meet the needs of students looking to advance their career opportunities. Upon successful completion of the course you will have gained the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge/understanding required for the CompTIA-set on-line tests for A+ Certification (i.e. A+ Certification Operating System Technologies & Hardware examinations) plus CISCO IT Essentials V4.0.

This course can also be used to count as one module towards equivalent modules on other awards, for example, the Advanced University Certificate in Network Administration (a four module course) or the Foundation Degree in Computing Technology (a 12 module course). Both these courses are also offered by Preston College.
