About this course

The programme is specifically designed to allow you to demonstrate achievement of the Professional Standards for Teachers and Trainers in Education and Training. These Professional Standards, published in May 2014, stipulate the minimum professional requirement in terms of knowledge, skills and professional values. Once you have completed this programme and are active as a teacher, trainer or tutor in the sector, you will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Status Learning and Skills (QTLS) as part of the professional formation process.

You need to hold a recognised professional qualification at a minimum of Level 3 (NQF/QCF) such as a BTEC National, City & Guilds Advanced, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent. Your qualification needs to be in the subject area that you wish to teach and you need to have post-qualification experience of employment in that professional area.

GCSE English and GCSE Mathematics at Grade C or Grade 4 or above, or equivalent, are desirable.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through coursework and observations of teaching and training. The assessment strategies are varied but place a significant focus on developing knowledge and skills that will be useful in practice. Portfolios of evidence, drawn from the trainee’s practice, encourage the development of innovation in teaching and learning activities. During the programme each trainee will be observed eight times. These observations will be shared between tutors and work-based mentors. This approach offers you feedback not only on generic aspects of teaching but also the teaching of your subject specialism. There are no formal written examinations as part of the current assessment methods on this programme.

Who will be teaching me?

You will be taught by tutors who have a wealth of Further and Higher Education experience and  work-based mentor trainers who are specialists in their subject area.
