Programme outline

1. Introduction to the Bible: Who wrote it, when and how? Reading and understanding the Bible †(Assigned passage for this session ‘The Gospel of Mark' Chapters 1-9)

2. Hermeneutical issues: such as the role of the author, text and reader in finding the meaning of a text. Issues such as revelation, inspiration, authority, canon and translations.

3. The Bible as Literature: The nature of scripture continued. Literary genres

4. An introduction to Biblical criticism.

5. Gospel criticism: The gospels as literature. Gospel audiences and cultural contexts.

6. The Bible in Theology: Relating the Bible to contemporary culture and current issues.

7. Context, Culture and Interpretation: Liberation theology and biblical interpretation by the poor.

8. Mark's Gospel: Practical exercise on the text of Mark and the parables.

† There will be an assigned passage to read prior to each session.
