Use of Maths AS
INTRODUCTION
This is a new course for students who wish to continue the study of Maths beyond GCSE but who do not necessarily wish to complete a full AS and A level in Mathematics.
It will also be of particular interest to students who require some advanced level Mathematics to support other subjects e.g. Sciences, Social Sciences etc.
Although not its primary aim, the course may also be used as a bridging course for students who wish to study AS/A level Mathematics but who do not yet have an appropriate background (particularly in Algebra).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
The course aims to develop ability and confidence in Mathematics when applied to real (and up to date) situations. Mathematical modelling is used (with the aid of computers and graphical calculations) to explore situations such as the spread of diseases, the growth of the Internet, business applications etc.
CONTENT
There are three modules:
Working with algebra and graphical techniques
Decision Maths
Financial Maths
The last two of these are classed as free standing units. This means that unlike any other AS level, you receive a separate qualification on completion of these units. This might be particularly useful if for any reason you were unable to complete the full AS course.
It is worth noting that the individual free standing units attract UCAS points.
ASSESSMENT
All three units are each assessed by a 1 hour exam. The three units carry equal weighting.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
You will experience a wide variety of teaching and learning styles. In particular, you will use IT (especially graph plotting software and spreadsheets) to assist the learning process.
In addition to computers and graphical calculators, a brand new style of textbook which incorporates spreadsheet activities, additional resources sheets and relevant website addresses is available to support your work.
You will be encouraged to take advantage of our tutorial facilities and your work will be monitored with regular review homework and assessments.
The course will consist of 5 hours per week in college and another 5 hours private study.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
As part of an advanced level programme, a minimum of 4 G.C.S.E.s at grade C or above (or the equivalent). A grade C or above in GCSE (higher) Mathematics.
LENGTH OF COURSE
AS level is one year
WHERE NEXT?
Mathematics is a useful (and sometimes essential) tool for many careers including business, accounting, computing, science, engineering, and teaching to name but a few. This course will provide an insight into how Mathematics is used in these areas and may equally form a basis for further mathematical study.
Please note: Use of Maths is only available as an AS qualification (i.e. we do not offer A2 Use of Maths at present).
