Course Progression: This qualification is the standard requirement for those wishing to study mathematics at Advanced Level, and for further study in Engineering and the Sciences.
Careers Progression: Mathematics GCSE is a requirement for a career in teaching and is the accepted level of numeracy in many other careers. It can also increase opportunities in many other subjects.
Course Description:
To develop a range of mathematical skills and to provide an essential qualification needed for entry to higher level courses and employment. This course is principally for learners who already have a grade D in GCSE Maths or equivalent.
Description Breakdown:
This is a one-year intensive course at higher tier, which requires a high degree of commitment. In order to make progress you must be prepared to work a minimum of two hours per week in addition to class time. Homework is set regularly and is an integral part of the course. The course is modular, which means that you can take a number of short examinations during the year and your scores are then combined to give you an overall final grade.
The examinations you will take are:
Modules 1: Handling Data, Exam 18%
Modules 3: Number, Exam 27%
Module 5: Algebra and Shape and Space, Exam 55%
Modules 1 and 3 may be taken in the spring term.
Module 5 is taken in the summer term.
If you need to retake any modules re-sits are available in November of the following academic year.
