Aims/Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of the vascular anatomy of the arm

Perform and be aware of dangers and complications of this invasive technique

To safely work towards competence

  • Discuss the function and structure of veins; identify the names and locations of the veins most suitable for phlebotomy
  • List equipment and supplies needed to collect blood and discuss the correct use of each.
  • Describe the steps in performing a venepuncture procedure.
  • Discuss techniques and equipment used to minimize biohazard exposure.
  • Identify procedural errors and discuss remedies for each.
  • Identify complications associated with blood collection and discuss how to appropriately respond when each occurs.
  • Recognize suboptimal specimens and their effect on the quality of laboratory test results.

On completion of the course you will receive a certificate of Attendance. It will be up to you to obtain competence, however, you will be given advice on how to gain competence under supervision at your workplace. This is standard practice and is inline with other course providers.
