the consequences of Britain’s maturing economy, continuing urbanization and the development of local government

the labour and women’s movements of the later 19th century.

the changing role of the state in relation to education; the nature of later 19th century arts

the changing attitudes towards and role of monarchy; the impact of empire at home.
