Who is this course for? This course is suitable for young people who want to study at College but who may not have decided yet on a career route. It is ideal for those who want to improve basic and/or key skills and to try a variety of different taster options.

Previous knowledge required: No previous knowledge is required for this course. Acceptance on the course will be through the College application and interview process.

What will I study? Your main qualification will be the OCR Learning Skills Award. Core modules include; Communication Skills, Maths and ICT. Options include Childcare, Hospitality and Catering, Hair and Beauty, Construction, Motor Vehicle, Land based and Environmental Studies, Business Studies.

What else will I do? You will be able to take part in Young Enterprise and Outdoor Challenge. There is the opportunity to gain Emergency First Aid and Essential Food Hygiene qualifications and get a real idea of what it is like to go to work by taking part in work experience.

How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through projects and assignments as well as through observation of your work, set tasks and from evidence in your file.

What will I achieve? You will achieve the OCR Learning Skills Award and a portfolio of other qualifications at Level 1 based on the modules that you have undertaken.

What can I do afterwards? Most learners on this course choose to develop their skills for employment by enrolling on the Preparation for Employment course or onto a course in a particular vocational area. Some learners enter employment.

Materials required: Appropriate personal protective equipment for practical sessions will be supplied by the college. Hospitality and Catering (Newtown Campus) will be expected to contribute to the cost of ingredients.
