- a greater understanding of the Ring’s context – both in terms of Wagner’s life and in a wider historical sense
- an understanding of the ideas – both philosophical and musical – contained within the Ring
- an understanding of the formal, harmonic and melodic characteristics of each part of the Ring.

Course programme

The course will focus on each part of the Ring cycle, placing them in their appropriate context, historically and musically, and analysing them in terms of their philosophical and musical content.

Tutor presentation and explanation, including handouts Guided listening and watching of audio and audio-visual examples Class discussion and debate Listening and reading outside class is encouraged and once enrolled futher online resources will be available.
