Water Source Engineering

On successful completion of this short course you will be able to:

• Understand and specify water quality and public health requirements for community water supplies
• Be aware of the exploration and investigation techniques available for groundwater studies
• Be able to outline the design features of protected springs and infiltration galleries, and carry out detailed design of wells and boreholes for domestic and agricultural water supply
• Specify pumping systems and select pumps for water distribution
• Describe the principles and practices of rainwater harvesting systems for domestic and agricultural use, and design simple systems
• Select sites for on-stream and off-stream water storage structures
• Carry out hydrological estimates (catchment yield and flood flows)
• Produce outline designs for small earth embankment dams and describe basic construction techniques and maintenance tasks.

• Pumping and pipe systems for water conveyance: – hydraulic principles, design practices.
