The place and style of film directors in the studio system
The scandals, the illusion and the reality. Is Hollywood cinema a genre cinema?
As long as there's been a "Hollywood" - (a part of Los Angeles synonymous with the studio system that perseveres in one form or another to this day) - there have been filmmakers who wanted to take it as their subject. When Hollywood takes a hard look at itself, it rarely has any illusions that it’s a dream factory. Los Angeles plays itself, as a character in films about Hollywood, a dark place of dreams located on forbidden maps to the stars. From Sunset Boulevard to Mulholland Drive, The Player to The Last Tycoon, this is the whole story of Hollywoodland, the studios and the stars.

Course programme
A history of Hollywood studios and their contract stars.
Classic and recent films about Hollywood that shine a spotlight on the process of filmmaking.
Go behind the scenes from silents to sound in The Artist and Singing in the Rain. Come and see the Bad and Beautiful Babylon that is Hollywood. Hail Hollywood! Hail, Caesar! - the Coen Brothers’ first film actually set in Tinseltown since 1991’s Barton Fink, which is set in Hollywood, 1951. We explore movies set in the so-called dream factory, in the town steeped in legend and death, scandal and shimmering decadence. Knowing some of the real-life secrets and inner workings can’t help but heighten the experience of watching Hollywood play itself, as if you’re in on the gossip. Self-regarding to the last, here are tantalising movies where Hollywood does what it does best: revel in its own image. Hooray for Hollywood!
