Birdsong, wildflowers, butterflies and bees are among the highlights of spring. Discover the season of peak activity in the natural world through two evening classes at CityLit and four Saturday field-trips within London.Brenna Boyle (B.Sc Hons Dunelm, M.Sc DIC) is a zoologist, wildlife guide and environmental teacher. She runs Wild Capital, London's wildlife discovery service and also works for two urban environmental education charities.

- Describe and appreciate the range of wildlife that flourishes alongside us in London- Outline features of several London habitats- Describe some of the key natural events taking place in the spring time- Recognise a variety of London birds and understand their behaviour in spring- Identify a range of London invertebrate and describe their ecology- Recognise a variety of spring wildflowers and understand plant ecology- Gain confidence in independently exploring and enjoying London’s many wild spaces- State some ways in which you could become involved with the conservation and study of London's wildlife-.
There are no additional costs, aside from your travel to the sites. Bring your own experience of wildlife in London. For weeks 3-6 wear suitable outdoor clothing including sturdy footwear, bring binoculars if you have them and wish to use them.
There will be no work outside of the class, however guidance to finding further information will be provided each week as well as suggestions of where in London to experience the different elements of this course.

Course programme
Over a total of 6 sessions (2 classroom, 4 fieldtrip) the following topics will be covered:
• An overview of London habitats and species
• Seasonal natural events in spring
• Bird song and bird nesting behaviour
• Invertebrates; ecology and identification
• Spring flowers; ecology and identification
The first two sessions will take place in the classroom at City Lit on a Tuesday evening 18:30 - 20:30. The next four sessions be Saturday fieldtrips from 11:00 – 13:00. The 4 field trips will take place at:
• Kensington Gardens
• The Thames Riverside in West London
• WaterWorks Nature Reserve, Lee Valley
• Nunhead Cemetery, Southwark.
