Course programme
This popular, practical course is a grand introduction to the craft. It gives newcomers a sound approach and helps self-taught turners sort out problems and develop skills. The design and production of a range of projects is undertaken. Each task brings into play important aspects of technique: once grasped, these apply to the making of a host of turned work. Tool sharpening is dealt with in detail. Personal tools are frequently brought along so that difficulties can be resolved and edges restored!
Course Content
This course is aimed at newcomers to our craft and will hopefully give you a sound base on which to build your skills. You will learn what each tool is for and what you should not do, safely. After a short time learning different cuts, how to use a chuck and basic common sense, we will turn a simple project between centres. As you progress, we will move on to make a small, simple bowl which will enable us to discuss/use chuck methods in the process. Time permitting, we will move onto a project that combines both spindle and faceplate work such as a candlestick or a box. You can expect to go home tired, but ready to face any project safely and confidently.
The course day starts at 9.00am and finishes at approximately 4.30pm (Please note that courses run on a Saturday will start at 8.30am and finish at 4pm). Lunch and refreshment breaks take place in line with the course schedule.
