World Development A Level LocationCranford Avenue Course Overview Apply Now This is an ideal course for you if you are interested in world events and their impacts on people, both in Dorset and across the world. Development includes improvement or progress for people and their livelihoods, and the relationships between people and their environments. You will study and evaluate the effects that our life choices have on other people and our world. Be warned, the course may change your life! • One third of the marks are obtained through coursework and at A2 you have the opportunity to research and present a report of your own choice. Current learners are writing reports for the WHO, the UN and national governments departments for Indonesia and Sierra Leone. Weymouth College AS Level students achieved an overall 100% pass rate every year since 2009. Many students gain their best result in this subject. • Learners have progressed onto International Development degree courses regularly. • Visiting speakers from Red Cross and local homeless charity.

Course Content This is an ideal course if you are interested in world events and their impact on people. Development includes improvement or progress for people and their livelihoods, and the relationships between people and their environments. You will study and evaluate the effects that our life choices have on other people and our world. AS • Development, resources and global citizenship • Poverty and inequality This links a wide range of subjects including Geography, Sociology, Government & Politics, Psychology and others. It looks in depth at pollution, poverty, refugees, deforestation and famine and their effects on people. What can be done to help people, and whose responsibility is it? A2 Develops the AS units further and explores the changing concepts of development. It contrasts approaches of governments, NGOs and communities, and includes aspects of development (economic, social, political, and environmental) and the extent to which it can be sustainable. Progression This subject will help you gain access to a wide range of careers and university courses. Past students have gained places on degree courses such as International development, Ecology, Psychology, primary teaching, Adult Nursing, Business and Economics. They are currently studying at universities including Aberystwyth, Kent, Plymouth, and Bournemouth. Fees • If you are aged 16-18 as of 31 August on the year of enrolment – no course fee. • If you are over 19 as of 31 August and enrolling on a full-time programme of study a tuition fee will be applicable in most cases. Bursary funds There are financial support arrangements for 16-18 year olds and hardship funds available for the over 19s.
