You willl read, analyse and discuss long and short fictions from many countries, in English and in translation. Come and read and discuss these carefully selected treasures of world literature, from the second half of the 20th century, including masterpieces of family chronicle from Norway's Tarjei Vesas and Catalonia's Merce Rodoreda; Natalia Ginzburg's subtle, haunting autobiographical fiction of life in Italy during World War II and its aftermath; recently discovered tales of survival, loss and gulit by Fred Uhlman (Germany/UK), Helen Weinzweig (Poland/Canada); and Ida Simon's A Foolish Virgin, a freshly-translated story of Jewish lives in Holland before the war.
Biographical details:
Aamer Hussein is a well-known short story writer, novelist, and essayist He has held professorial posts at the universities of London and Southampton, and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of English Studies.

Discuss a variety of genres from an interesting literary decade which produced many prominent writers; examine how the novels of manners, detective stories and fantasies of the past compare with other works in their genres and may have influenced literary trends that followed.

You will read outstanding long and short fictions from many countries, which range from memories of lost lands and records of exile and repatriation to dramatic depictions of family conflicts and complex relationships.
