The course is an introduction to the modern short story – from the 19thC master of the genre Anton Chekhov to the present day. We’ll see how Chekhov changed the rules of short story writing and remains hugely influential; how James Joyce used the short story to evoke with “scrupulous meanness” the flavour of early twentieth century Dublin; how their work shaped other masters of the genre such as Rudyard Kipling, DH Lawrence and Katherine Mansfield; how Franz Kafka created the modernist short story in tales like Metamorphosis; and on to more modern writers like Alice Munro, or Zadie Smith whose funny, surprising stories capture the feel of multi cultural Britain.
