An ongoing idea, especially since the rise of industrial civilization, is that a time will come when we will have overcome material needs, and have entered a time of plenty without the need to work for the necessities of life. This ‘return to Eden’ may not, however, simply be wishful thinking but a feasible state of affairs. But how well will we cope in such a ‘post-scarcity’ society? Are there fundamental philosophical and political objections to a post-scarcity society? How might different post-scarcity societies be envisioned?
