Alla Prima Still Life Masterclass - Bristol (5 Days)

This five-day alla prima still life masterclass will comprise all the essential elements of "alla prima" still life painting: composition; proportion; value; hue; chroma and texture.


"Alla prima" is the direct painting method used by masters of the late nineteenth century, such as John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla, as well as contemporary masters like Richard Schmidt. On this course, Tom Greenwood will take you through the elements of this approach, as well as the scientific principles which underpin modern painting.


Students should bring their own objects which they wish to include in their still life, and Tom will help you arrange a composition, based on the atmosphere and feeling you wish to create in your picture. A still life can be simple, complex, quiet or dramatic. As long as you know what you're aiming for, there are compositional tools to create that effect.
