Applied Media Studies


Why should I study Media Studies?
Media Studies will give you the opportunity to study many aspects of the media and to apply this knowledge in creating media products. The course covers both the analysis and production of media, exploring such areas as radio, television and popular music.

What will I study?
These four key concepts form the basis of the subject content:
  • Media Language: forms and conventions
  • Audience
  • Institutions
  • Representation

The course is divided into two units.

Unit 1:
Students will study three of the following four
  • Moving Image
  • Words and Still Images
  • Sound
  • Multi Media


Unit 2:
An externally set Brief which will explore two media forms in response:
  • Moving Image
  • Words and Still Images
  • Sound
  • Multi Media


Assessment Objectives
  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Analysis and interpretation
  • Production skills

The course covers spiritual, moral, ethical, social, cultural and other issues.

What skills do I need?
  • An interest in a variety of media texts
  • Good written communication skills
  • An ability to work both independently and in groups
  • An interest in gaining practical media skills


How will I be taught?
There is a wide variety of methods, including teacher led work, group-work, class discussions and production work. Support will be provided by staff with all aspects of the theoretical and practical aspects of the course.

How is the course assessed?
100% Coursework, all practical based.

Unit 1:
Three pieces to include written and practical components that will be connected to three areas studied.

Unit 2:
Practical Production: Portfolio which will include a written commentary that will be in response to an externally set Brief.

What will this course prepare me for?
There is also the opportunity to progress to AS and A Level courses in Media at college.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
