Programme Structure & Content
The programme leads to a qualification to teach children in the 3-12 age range with registration to the General Teaching Council for Scotland. It combines exercise science and academic education study with practical inquiry in school settings and their communities.
First Year
Studies of basic science disciplines occupy the first year of study. An introduction to both Psychology and Biology is given coupled with an introductory Sports Science course followed by a more practical Exercise Physiology course. There is also the opportunity to undertake small introductory education courses at this level.
Second Year
Further expansion of Sport Science and development of Exercise & Health studies are provided at this level. These are combined with more advanced studies in Psychology, Physiology and courses delivering key skills applicable to Sports Studies. Additional small education courses on effective teaching and the changing curriculum are also available to study.
Third Year
Sports Science and Exercise Physiology forms an important component of third year together with education courses covering the academic study of curriculum, pedagogical and professional studies together with practical application in schools.
Fourth Year (Honours)
The Honours year comprises focused studies on sports psychology and promoting the physiological and psychological aspects of exercise and health. In addition, the education courses deepen the academic study of curriculum, pedagogical & professional studies with further practical application in schools.
Teaching & Assessment
In the early years, teaching involves attendance at lectures, practicals and tutorials. In the later years a rather greater proportion of the students' time is taken up with private study involving writing essays and reports and also in laboratory or library work relating to specific projects.
School Experience is assessed through partnership arrangements with Primary School teachers and head teachers and with University School of Education tutors. As the programme develops students will be expected to take increasing responsibility for determining and organising their own learning as part of their professional development.
