Why should I study Sociology at Cardinal Newman? Our exam results confirm we are amongst the best in the country with an A Level pass rate of 100%. The standard of teaching is excellent with positive, supportive and approachable staff.

You will use contemporary examples such as the latest news and current affairs including global issues during your studies. You will discover fascinating things about British Society and question your own ideas about the society you belong to.

There is a varied enrichment programme including guest speakers from local universities providing up to date research on topics such as human rights, education and raising awareness of cultural issues. Visiting speakers also include representatives from different faiths, the police and criminal justice system. As many of our students study Sociology and Criminology at degree level, including attending prestigious universities such as the University of Cambridge and Durham University, our students benefit from their return visits to college. You can join in competitions and quizzes and get involved in the work that we do to support charities.
What is Sociology?
Sociology is the study of society and how society influences us or how we influence society! Sociology draws on theories of research to develop our understanding of the world. It is topical, stimulating and covers a wide range of social issues. You do not need any previous knowledge of the subject in order to succeed but you do need an open mind and a curiosity to investigate contemporary society.
What exactly will I study?
The AS course will consist of:

· The Sociology of Families & Households: Why do we live in families? What is positive and what is negative about the family? How have the roles of men and women within the family changed over time?

· Research Methodology: an analysis of the ways sociologists gather data through interviews and observation.

· The Sociology of Education: what is the real purpose of the education system? Why do some social groups under achieve?

If you successfully complete the AS course you can, if you wish, continue on the A Level course. The course covers a wide range of topics including:

· The Sociology of Crime: which includes explanations of how and why certain social groups are more likely to commit crime and be labelled as criminals.

· The Sociology of Beliefs (Religion): which looks at the importance of the role of religion in society and how this has changed over time.

· Sociological theory: which covers the variety of conflicting approaches which attempt to explain how society is organised, who has power in society and why society has changed.
Will I enjoy Sociology?
If you have an interest in current affairs, enjoy solving problems and most importantly would like to uncover the reasons behind human behaviour patterns, then Sociology may be the subject for you. You will find enthusiastic and committed teachers who will support you to achieve your best by encouraging you to participate fully in each lesson.
Progression

Sociology helps to equip you for a wide range of careers such as social work, police, teaching, nursing, as well as media related careers such as journalism, research, marketing and advertising.
