You should already have grade B or above in GCSE Maths and Double Science, higher tier, plus 3 other GCSEs in academic subjects, including English, all at grade C or above. You will have to sit a diagnostic assessment to see whether this level of study is suitable for you. Mature students may not need the same academic qualifications but will still have to take the diagnostic assessment.

Course Content:
This course is split into 2 theory modules plus coursework. Module 1, Foundation Chemistry, includes atomic structure, bonding, periodicity and introduction to organic chemistry. Module 2, Chemistry in Action, includes energetics, kinetics, equilibria and analytical techniques. Coursework consists of assessed practical investigations, which are carried out throughout the year. If you are 16-19 years of age, you will also be on a Curriculum 2000 programme doing key Skills Communication, application of Number and IT, plus enrichment sessions.
Other Information:
Assessment for this course is by 2 linear written examinations taken in the summer term and practical coursework assessments throughout the year. You will also have regular assignments, tests and a mock examination. You will need to achieve good grades in both the informal assessment and the AS level examinations to move on to the second year. You must have been well motivated and your attendance and punctuality must also have been good.
Progression:
Successful students progress from AS to A2. Following this they may then move to higher education. You can also leave the course after the AS level examinations and go on to another level 3 course or employment.
