Introduction

Healthcare management studies concern with understanding of contemporary health issues influences by various factors such as economic, social, cultural, political and psychological etc. This Post Graduate programme provides opportunities to explore the nature of health needs and health policy of the government. The course places high priority on health promotion, professional development and management of organisations.

Assessment Procedure

Assessment is through regular coursework submitted throughout the year. To be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma, you must complete all modules successfully, including the Dissertation/Extended Essay. Your assessments, particularly your Dissertation/Extended Essay, can be linked to your workplace and so contribute directly to your work needs.

Course Structure*

TERM 1

Research Methods

This module aims to provide a foundation in research approach, methodology and analysis in preparation for the Work Related Project undertaken in Term 4.

Managing Business Organisations

This module concerns with the study of business organisations, critically examining various concepts of management within the current global business environment. Variety of management models and approaches, which are considered important in real business life, are systematically applied.

Personal and Professional Development

This module will look into personal and professional development of individuals in the areas of language, communication skills, writing and interpreting skills.

TERM 2

Managing Culture and Change

This module examines the ways in which P&D practitioner with understanding of corporate cultures might play a key role in the management of the various types, levels and stages of organisational change and change implementation. It helps in preparing the HR practitioner for a more interpretative/flexible, central and pro-active role in the mobilisation and realistic management of the processes and dynamics of organisational change.

Contemporary Health Issues

This module focuses on various contemporary health issues that are being debated in the country for many years for the benefit of the society. It also looks into other area from the point of view of future of healthcare industry and healthcare needs of the society.

Concepts of Health

This module looks into various concepts of- what is health? What should be the important part of a ‘good health'? Should the emphasis be on physical health, mental health or spiritual health of the individual and health of the nation?

TERM 3

Health Economics

This module looks into the economics of health of the nation and individuals. Major part of the GDP is spent on health and other service industries in the country, like education and transport. Where and how the priority should be fixed for the allocation of economic resources in order to achieve absolute advantage?

Ethnicity & Health

This module looks into various issues and their answers related to the health of the ethnic population in the country. It aims for looking at social patterns, food habits, and cultural affinity among various ethnic groups that affect the health system of the country.

Health Policy

This module looks critically into the state policy regarding the health of the nation and the health industry. Particularly, the module looks into the debate at national level for privatisation of the National Health Service and the issue of funding, if the National Health Service is to be retained under the control of the state.

TERM 4

Work Related Project

In this term a substantial research project (15,000 words) will be undertaken by each student individually under the title of ‘Work Related Project'. The project will be related with a real life business/national issue in the area of healthcare management.
