Foundation Degree Business Management Overview

The FdA Business Management is an innovative and flexible programme of study which has been designed in conjunction with local employers and Birmingham City University. This ensures that you are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required to operate in today’s challenging business and management environments.

This course is validated by Birmingham City University.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed a minimum of one of the following:

  • At least 160 UCAS points at A Level in appropriate subjects.
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related subject.
  • Appropriate BTEC National Diploma with MM profile or Extended Diploma with MMP profile or above.
  • Other relevant Level 3 qualification (normally at merit grade).
  • Alternatively, we will consider substantive experience in a relevant field.

We normally also require three GCSEs at grade C or above, to include English language and maths: English and maths at Level 2 are essential requirements.

Please note that maths at Level 2 is required for progression onto the BA (Hons) Business and Management (top-up) award or other programme beyond a Foundation Degree.

Provisional timetables will be discussed at interview, and confirmed in the final joining instructions which all students will receive in July.

This is a two-year full-time course, normally eight hours over two evenings per week or one afternoon and one evening per week with occasional all day events. You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and work outside the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, time-constrained assignments, case studies, individual/group projects and reflective statements.

Where modules are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting.

What does the course lead to?

Completed foundation degrees are worth 240 CATS points in line with the UK universities’ credit accumulated transfer scheme.

What can I go on to study?
  • Upon successful completion you may wish to progress to the BA (Hons) Business and Management top-up) available at the college, or another appropriate top-up award at another institution. All further study options will be subject to entry requirements.
  • Upon successful completion you may wish to continue your studies at the college to gain a qualification, subject to entry requirements.
  • Alternatively, you could complete an appropriate top-up degree at another institution.
  • If you were seeking employment, possible options include a wide range of supervisory or management roles within the public, private and voluntary sectors. For example, the course may lead to roles within finance, marketing, human resource management or planning and operations. This list is not exhaustive.
