This course aims to provide you with high-level language skills and introduce you to major contemporary cultural, historical, political and economic developments and issues concerning the two countries.
With the option to spend a year abroad, the study of French and Spanish will equip you with language and communication experience and a range of transferable skills valued by employers.
WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?
This course aims to provide you with a real understanding of recent social, political, business and cultural developments concerning the two countries. With the option to spend a year abroad, the study of French and Spanish will equip you with language and communication experience and a range of transferable skills valued by employers.
If you choose this course you will benefit from:
- year studying or working abroad, which provides you with an international experience that many businesses are looking for when employing a graduate. You will usually spend half of the year in a French speaking country and half of the year in a Spanish-speaking country;
- use of modern technologies, such as busuu and Duolingo, to maintain links with native speakers of the language that you are studying;
- experienced teaching staff who bring professional or research expertise in to their teaching;
- modules in French and Spanish culture and society that gives you specific applied language skills which will be relevant to the workplace;
- the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by mentoring pupils and shadowing language teachers (subject to application).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
This course is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect new developments and the requirements of the profession and of employers. The following represents some of the subjects that currently make up the course. You will develop your language skills through the study of contemporary society, translation and the business cultures of French and Spanish speaking countries.
HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?Your course will be based on a series of mini-lectures and task-based activities such as translation from and into French and Spanish, listening and grammar exercises, oral presentations and summary writing from written and audio/visual sources. In addition, your personal tutor will review and discuss your progress with you and will be available for advice.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?Assessments on this course include listening comprehensions, translations, summaries, group oral presentations, online grammar tests and reading comprehensions. Some subjects require essay writing, and most are assessed by a combination of coursework and exam (with oral exams for language).
An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 35%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; practical or project work 10%; group work etc 5%, presentations, posters etc.10%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURSIn a typical week you will have up to 15 contact hours of teaching and this could break down as:
Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 3 hours per week to practise conversation with a language assistant as well as tutorials (individual or in small groups), and individual project supervision in your final year
Medium group teaching: 10 hours of workshops, seminars and language classes
Large group teaching: 2 hours of lectures
Personal study: 25 hours each week studying and revising in your own time
