A2 Level Geography

Why should I study A2 Level Geography?
In this second year of your 'A' Level qualification you will build upon the skills and knowledge you gained at 'AS' Level whilst broadening the depth and your understanding of contemporary Geographical issues.
As you decide the direction you want your education to go the course remains enjoyable, well structured and should provide you with a stimulating year of study.
The principal function of the course is to enable you to attain the highest 'A' Level grade it is possible for you to achieve... and make it as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

What will be studied on the course?
The Geographical Issues unit covers:

  • A study of the skills and techniques used during geographical research.

The Global Issues course covers:

  • Earth Hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, flooding and landslides and how they can be managed to reduce their impact.
  • Climatic Hazards such as hurricanes and other forms of extreme weather and how their impact can be managed.
  • The study, in depth, of the causes and likely effects of global warming.
  • The impact on the planet of explosive population growth.

When does the course start and how long does it last?
This is the second year of a two year course and lasts one academic year.

What qualifications are needed to do the course?
Successful completion of the AS is needed to progress onto A2.

Where is the course based?
All classes are based at the Lanchester site.

How will the learner be assessed?
A2 is a modular course with two written examinations including:

  • A Geographical Skills examination in January
  • A Global Issues examination in May.

No project work required for this 'A' Level qualification.

How much will the course cost?
All the books and equipment you will need will be provided. You may be asked to cover some of the cost of transport for any fieldwork visits we undertake to provide first hand experience of various aspects of the course.

What progression routes are available?
This course is designed to provide you with the highest 'A' Level grade you can achieve. You may use this qualification to apply for employment or it may provide a significant proportion of the points you need for your chosen Higher Education courses. If you are interested in incorporating Geography within your career your Geography 'A' level may be used to pursue courses at University in Tourism, Town Planning, Geology, Agriculture, Environmental Management, Teaching or Resource Management.
In addition many Geography graduates use their degree qualification to gain entry to higher-level trainee management posts in a wide variety of the major British and foreign institutions.
