Course Aims

Accounting Technicians have excellent career prospects and there is always a strong demand for their skills in the work place. An Accounting Technician may work in a wide variety of finance roles for many types of organisations, including manufacturing companies,
local and central government, the health service, banks and insurance companies and private accountancy firms. Self employment is also a possibility for qualified technicians.

In addition, many who qualify as
Accounting Technicians go on to
continue their studies, using the
qualification as a stepping stone
to eventually become professional
accountants with one of the other
accounting bodies.

Accounting Technician students
come from all walks of life. You may
already to be working or going to
college, or perhaps you are a mature
student who wants to get back into
work. You may even be currently
working in an accounting related
area, and although experienced, wish
to pursue a formal qualification.

Special Features

Work Experience
In addition to passing the
examinations, students are required
to have at least two years relevant
work experience. Accounting
Technicians Ireland will recognise
any relevant experience obtained
prior, during or after completing the
examinations. The reason for the
work experience requirement is that,
as a member of Accounting
Technicians Ireland, you will be
offering your services as a qualified
Accounting Technician so you must
actually be able to do the work
involved as well as understand the
theory behind it.

Accounting Technicians Ireland do
not specify the precise experience
to be obtained given the variety of
Accounting Technician roles.
Obviously, if you are already working
in industry, commerce, the public
sector or private practice while
studying for your qualification, you
will be gaining valuable experience
for yourself and putting the theory
into practice.

Once students have passed the
examinations and obtained their two
years relevant work experience, they
may be eligible for Full membership
of Accounting Technicians Ireland to
use the letters MIATI.

Assessment Methods

The course is assessed by candidates sitting four externally set and marked examinations and one practical assessment in the ‘Integrated Accounting Systems unit’

Progression Routes

Students who hold the full Accounting
Technicians Ireland qualification can
progress to become fully qualified
chartered accountants recognised by
the Institute of Chartered Accountants
in Ireland (ICAI). The route they take
is similar to that of graduates. They
will need to be in a training contract
with an employer and at the same
time study for and take the chartered
accountancy professional
examinations: ‘CAP 1, CAP 2 and
Professional 3’ on a part time basis.
These can be taken at Queen’s
University in Belfast as well as in
various institutions in the Republic
of Ireland.
