Course Content
The course is heavily biased towards practical skills, with theoretical sessions to provide underpinning knowledge.
Functional Skills subjects (Maths, Physics, English and IT to Level 2) will also be taught to enable the student to maintain the required standard.
You will study engineering fundamentals, mathematics, science, IT, aircraft fundamentals, aircraft systems, theory of flight, weight and balance, electrics, piston engines, propellers and air legislation. Apart from Functional Skills, most of the above will be learnt during practical sessions.
Students will make use of the Colleges extensive workshop facilities to learn basic hand skills and work on the aircraft and components.
Assessment/Exams
Practical work and underpinning knowledge will be assessed by the Colleges NVQ assessors and verifiers on an ongoing basis. These assessments will be externally verified. A portfolio will need to be raised and maintained throughout the course.
Progression/Career Path
To maintain aircraft requires properly trained, skilled personnel. Training continues throughout the students working life within the aircraft industry. The NVQ Level 2 course is the first rung of the ladder to becoming a professional licensed engineer.
This course allows suitable students to progress to:
- EASA Part 66 Aircraft Mechanics Course (2 years)
- C&G 2661 Certificate in Aeronautical Engineering
- Join industry as an aircraft mechanic (trainee)
- Join the armed services within their aeronautical areas
