Course content
The first AS module is an introduction to digital and analogue systems. Digital systems include both combinational and sequential logic. Boolean algebra and Karnaugh mapping are used to analyse systems, so some mathematical skills are required. Analogue systems involve various applications of the operational amplifier.
The second AS module has the general title Circuits and Components. It includes such things as timing circuits and transistor circuits.
The AS coursework is in two parts, each of which is a software project: Ladder Logic and PIC Programming. These are techniques which are both used in industry.
In the A2 year, the modules are in communication systems and systems applications, covering applications such as audio systems and instrumentation systems. The A2 project is a design and build exercise, but the final project needs only to be completed on prototype board, so that soldering is not required.
What Could I Do Next?
Many of our previous students have gone on to study electronics or a similar subject at university. Some have gone into employment in the local electronics industry.
How Will I Be Assessed?
AS and A2 Electronics are each split into 3 modules, 2 of which are examined with 1hr 15min written exams, and a third separate coursework module comprises 30% of the total marks each year.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
If you progress to A2 Level, then you will need to buy components for your project. This could cost as little as 5.00, depending on your design.
