Course content
Law is a much sought after subject which will help to develop a critical mind, problem-solving skills and an awareness of some of the more complex legal issues. For AS, students will study the English Legal System which includes legal personnel, the civil and criminal processes including police powers and sentencing, and the various sources of law, including the European dimension. After successful completion of AS, students can progress to A2 where they will study a variety of offences and defences in the criminal law.
How Will I Be Assessed?
There is no coursework in AS or A2, therefore assessment is via end-of-module examinations. There are 2 modules for AS and 2 modules for A2.
AS: Year 1
The English Legal System is assessed by a 2 hour exam paper comprising of seven questions, from which students will attempt four. For AS Sources of Law there is a 1 hour exam paper comprising of one three-part source-based question from a choice of two.
A2: Year 2
Criminal Law is assessed by a 2 hour exam paper comprising of eight questions from which students will attempt three. For A2 Criminal Law Special Study there is a 1 hour exam paper comprising of one three-part question on an area of Law chosen by the Examination Board, based on a pre-released study material sent out by the Board the previous autumn.
What Could I Do Next?
Law is very much a vocational subject and is often studied as a single discipline at university. However, it is also commonly found as one of the subjects in a joint honours degree and is an important component in many other degrees such as Business Studies. The study of Law at university often leads to a career as a solicitor or barrister, but legal training is also valuable in many other sectors including the police, the civil service, local government, the court service or the wider commercial field.
Are There Any Special Expenses?
There are no special expenses although travel costs for trips and entrance fees to conferences may be incurred.
