Course Description
Sociology, Social Psychology and Psychology are the three principle disciplines that provide the knowledge base and academic framework for the programme. Social policy is a subsidiary area of study. Substantive themes explored in the programme are:

The main aims are:
  • To develop a critical and analytic understanding of intra and inter personal aspects of human behaviour, groups and society.
  • To develop the intellectual and practical skills of students in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data.
  • To prepare students for a range of occupations in the public, private and voluntary sector.
  • To foster an open-minded enquiring attitude which will encourage life-long learning.


At Level 4, students follow a course of study, which includes:

Core Modules:
  • Citizenship and Social Welfare
  • Data Collection and Analysis
  • Introduction to Sociology
  • Understanding Self and Others


Optional Modules:
  • Introduction to Criminology
  • Law and Social Change
  • Representation and Variation in English
  • Civil Liberties and Human Rights
  • Poltics of Law and Order


At Level 5 students follow a course of study which includes:

Core Modules:
  • Children and Social Welfare
  • Gender, Ethnicity and Social Identity
  • People and Organisations
  • Social Research Methods


Optional Modules:
  • Family Welfare Law
  • Language Culture and Education
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminology and the Explanation of Crime
  • Criminal Justice
  • Work-based Learning


At Level 6 students follow a course of study which includes:

Core Modules:
  • Gender, Politics, Health and Social Policy
  • Interpersonal Skills and Human Relationships


Optional Modules:
  • Law & Society
  • Employment Law
  • Penology
  • Policing and Crime Prevention
  • Language and Society


At Level 6 (year 3), students will also undertake a dissertation (40 credits).

Assessment
Students are assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, exams, projects and presentations. A dissertation must be completed in Level 6. Students electing for workbased learning will negotiate an individual learning contract, with suitable supervision.

We also offer Access to Higher Education courses which are ideally suited to anyone who needs preparation to study at degree level.

Progression Routes
Employers often seek graduates with application skills in data gathering, processing and analysis. With these being linked to an informed and expressive understanding of the social world, this degree pathway has formed the foundation of a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates typically enter careers in central and local government; teaching (via PGCE); the voluntary sector; probation and police work; human resources; business and finance; social and community services; journalism and media; commercial, public and other active research environments.

In particular, graduates from this programme will appeal to employers who require a degree of flexibility, problem-solving ability and a broad knowledge base. A significant proportion of applied social science students progress into postgraduate studies and research at Masters and/or doctoral levels, with many attaining valued postgraduate places within some of the UK's finest universities.
