Course programme
The course will help you develop some of these skills:
NUMBER
• Reading, writing, ordering and comparing positive and negative numbers
• Carrying out calculations with numbers of any size using efficient methods
• Calculating ratio and direct proportion
• Fractions: for comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting amounts and quantities
• Decimals: ordering, comparing, approximating for solving practical problems
• Decimals: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing, rounding
• Percentages: ordering, comparing, writing and ordering
• Finding percentage parts of quantities and measurements
MEASURE SHAPE AND SPACE
• Calculate money
• Time – calculate, measure and record in different formats
• Reading, estimating and comparing length, distance, weight and capacity using metric units
• Estimating and measuring temperature, reading scales
• Using given formulae for finding perimeter, volume and area for regular shapes
• Interpreting and constructing scale drawings
• Using 2 and 3 dimensional shapes to solve problems in space eg in maps and plans
HANDLING DATA
• Extracting data from tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs
• Collecting, organising and representing information in tables, diagrams, charts and line graphs
• Finding the mean and using it evaluate data
• Finding the range and using it to describe the spread within a set of data
• Identifying the range of possible outcomes of an event; using fractions, decimals, percentages to evaluate likelihood of an event
Assessment Methods:
Homework, classwork, diagnostic assessment, final exam
The exam for the functional maths qualification is usually taken on the computer as it is an online exam. You will practise using the computer to take this exam. In exceptional circumstances a paper exam can be requested (please discuss with your tutor).
