Geography examines the issues of changes in our human and physical environment. You will study how the past can affect the present and how the present may affect the future. We examine change on a range of scales from local and national, to international and global. You will acquire a broad range of skills that equip you well for University study and employment.

Course Content
AS Unit 1; Physical and Human Geography
a)Rivers, floods and managementThe drainage basin hydrological cycle; factors affecting river discharge; physical and human causes of flooding.
b)Population changeBirth and death rates and life expectancy; demographic transition; social; economic and political implications of population change.
c)Hot desert environments and their marginsCauses of aridity, effects of wind and water; desertification; managing hot desert environments.
d)Food supply issuesGlobal patterns of food supply, consumption and trade. The geopolitics of food. Environment and sustainable food supplies
AS Unit 2; Geographical skills
A skills paper based on the topics in unit 1, using investigative, cartographic, graphical, ICT and statistical skills.
A2 Unit 3; An issues based approach to geographical themes.
For the exam student must study three of four areas. You will be taught all four.
a)Platetectonics and associated HazardsPlate theory, Processes and Landforms, Vulcanicity, Impacts of volcanoes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis and their effects.
b)Weather, Climate and associated Hazards;Atmospheric circulation. The climate of Britain, tropical storms, Urban climate, Global climate change.
c)World Cities;Urbanisation, counter - urbanisation, urban decline, regeneration. Impact of out of town retailing. Waste management, transport systems
c)Development and globalisation;Global production, distribution and marketing. growth in the 21st century and the North/South divide. Trade versus Aid. Sustainable tourism?

AS Unit 1:2 hour exam.
AS Unit 2:1 hour exam.
What can I do next?
Providing the students gain the AS Geography award he/she may progress to the Advanced level award.
Alternatively, points may be gained for university entrance purposes.
