Why study Psychology?
Are you interested in people? Do you like research and reading? If so you will enjoy this course. Psychology is the science of mind and behaviour which covers a range of topics to enable you to understand how and why people behave in the way that they do. You will have opportunities to take part in debates that increase your ability to analyse and evaluate existing theories.
What will I learn?
You will learn the historical context of psychological research and compare the perspectives e.g. Biological, Cognitive and Socio-cultural to explain behaviour. This will include the development of psychological theories of behaviour such as how memory is reconstructed and the practical applications of each idea to the real world such as the use of questions that increase the reliability of Eye Witness Testimony.
How will I learn?
The lessons you will participate in cover a wide range of teaching and learning styles and activities including use of IT materials on the college's IT network that encourage you to be independent and creative learners. Class discussion and debate will allow you to reflect on the issues studied in the subject, such as the nature/nurture debate on whether people have control over their own actions and how useful research is to the real world. You will appreciate that no one explanation or theory of behaviour fully explains psychology phenomena. An interest in reading a variety of texts will enable you to benefit fully from the course.
What will I be able to do next?
Psychology is a popular subject at university. It is very useful in all careers where you interact with other people. Specialist second degrees are available in clinical, occupational, educational, criminal, health and sports psychology, details can be found on the British Psychological Society
/>
How will I be assessed?
You will complete a practical assignment and there will be 3 written exams for higher level (2 for standard).
