Introduction to Teaching English as a Foreign Language
This course introduces you to methods of teaching vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar and will equip you with skills to go directly into employment or further training.

What Will I Learn On This Course?

By the end of the course you will be able to:
· Use basic teaching aids (OHP, Language Lab, Computers etc)
· Teach language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing)
· Present and practise language structures
· Teach pronunciation and do basic phonetic transcription (International Phonetic Alphabet)
· Show awareness of problems encountered by learners
· Use error correction techniques
· Teach vocabulary
· Show a basic awareness of the current national ESOL curriculum
· Show a basic knowledge of the principles and theory of second language teaching

The following areas will be introduced during the 17 week course:
· Course overview - introduction to learning techniques and teaching aids
· Teaching aids and teaching language skills
· Presenting and practising language structures - present, future and past forms and usage in English
· Class management and lesson plans
· Lesson plans and evaluation
· Teaching pronunciation and phonetics - workshop activities
· Error correction workshop (case study) - modals in English
· Teaching vocabulary and Computer Language Learning - CALL
· Teaching vocabulary and introduce national ESOL curriculum
· Micro teaching and evaluation
· Lesson Observation and evaluation
· Language learning theories
· Teaching material/EFL exams, more advanced TEFL courses and building a portfolio for moderation

Course Content And Method Of Assessment

During the course students will undertake a number of short assignments, which will constitute their portfolio of evidence.

After The Course

On successful completion of this course students will be able to progress onto certified programmes or use their skills in introductory teaching situations.

Advice on progression to further training or employment will be given.

Introduction to TEFL can be taken alongside a full Advanced Level programme of study.
