Spanish is also studied at NVQ level. This is a valuable opportunity for you to develop practical communication skills with vocationally relevant material.

Community Languages: Wherever possible we try to offer languages spoken by students at home as examination subjects, such as Urdu, Turkish and Arabic.

Languages are an investment in your future: speaking more than one language is a huge bonus in today's global job market where trade, business and administration are conducted across national boundaries. If you enjoy talking to people and asking questions then languages are for you.

Course details
A lot of class time will be spent on practising the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, through a range of topics, such as young people and the media, education, health and social problems. The Language Resources Area has computers with Internet links, as well as satellite TV.

How is it assessed?
Your work will be assessed through regular tests, various exercises in class and at home, and a mock examination in February.

Course duration
One year at AS level. One year at A2 level.

What do I need to study this subject?
You should have a GCSE grade A*-C in the language you wish to study, unless you are bilingual.

Where can this lead me?
Success at A level can lead to specialist degrees and a variety of careers. In higher education, languages can be combined with a wide range of subjects. Competence in languages enhances prospects in almost any career.

What are the enrichment opportunities?
We offer a wide range of enrichment activities such as trips and exchanges abroad. We watch foreign films, go to the cinema and conferences, and hold fiestas and fairs with foreign food and music.
