Media Techniques: Radio and Press Journalism
This course is only made available to second year students at the College and it gives students a vocationally recognised level 3 qualification in Radio and Print Journalism.
The major aim of the course is that students will be able to gain practical experiences in print and radio journalism.

· Desktop publishing
· Photo journalism
· Radio studio production
· Radio journalism
To support the practical work students will have developed detailed understanding of all the skill and supporting knowledge involved in the preparation, production, post-production and evaluation of work as it relates to radio and print journalism.
What Will I Learn On This Course?
Alongside the practical elements students' knowledge will be supported by a knowledge of the radio and print media industries. Students will need to carry out externally set assignments and one unit that is externally tested. These will be in the following areas:
Researching information and investigating media industries
Understanding law, regulation, health and safety, and working practices in media industries
Media industries: organisation and practice (externally examined)
Course Content And Method Of Assessment
This subject is particularly relevant for those students who wish to apply to more practical 'media related' courses.
The course is divided up into six main areas. Two of these are research and skills based and four are primarily practical productions. These are as follows:
· Researching information and investigating media industries
· Understanding law, regulation, health and safety, and working practices in media industries
· News and magazine journalism
· Radio journalism

· Print layout
· Desktop publishing
· Photo journalism
· Radio studio production
· Web page design
The course is awarded at Level 3 and there are three grading awards: Pass, Credit or Distinction.
After The Course
At the end of this course as well as gaining a Level 3 qualification, you will have completed a portfolio of practical and written work that may assist you in gaining entry into higher education.
Subject Combinations
This course is primarily run for students who are studying Media, Communication or Film Studies. However, it is also strongly encouraged that any student, who may be interested in a career in journalism would greatly benefit from the practical experiences offered.
