About this course

To develop skills in sea rescues and first aid to enable an individual to work as a beach lifeguard and as a personal achievement.

Anyone who enjoys physical activity, working outdoors and assisting in life saving and sea rescues.

To include the necessary physical and swim fitness levels that are required (you must be able to swim 400 metres, in a pool, in under 8 minutes and there will be a swim test which is usually on the penultimate day).

The RLSS Natonal Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualifications is an internationally-recognised award. Once you have gained your qualification, you can send off some details to the International Lifeguard Saving Federation to gain your International Surf Lifeguarding Certificate.Holding an ILS certificate can assist you to seek employment in the following countries around the world.

Whether you are completing the NVBLQ in order to work as a lifeguard in the UK, or to tick a challenge off your bucket list, fulfil part of your Duke of Edinburgh award, or are planning to escape the British weather and travel to Mexico to work on a surf camp, this qualification is a massive stepping stone which can lead to much greater things.

After successfully completing the course, candidates are more than welcome to come and gain some valuable work experience alongside our lifeguard patrol and surf coaches. It not only gives you the opportunity to put things into practise but also looks great on your CV!

• Being able to surf is not essential however it is beneficial to have some experience of being in the sea - particularly if we are due some swell! Don’t let this put you off though, there will be plenty of opportunities to train each day in the sea and our instructors are all very helpful!

Course programme

COURSE CONTENT

Over the duration of the first four days, you will be instructed on how to recover conscious and unconscious casualties from the sea using both a rescue boards and a rescue tube.

We will teach you how to read and navigate the surf in order to retrieve a casualty safely and effectively. You will also be learning techniques that will help you rescue a casualty with a spinal (or suspected spinal) injury. You will gain a better understanding of how the sea works, risk assessing potential hazards and how to avoid or deal with them. We will also demonstrate how best to set up and run a beach lifeguard patrol.

First aid and resuscitation play a vital part in the day-to-day life of a beach lifeguard and you will need to know how to assess and treat casualties appropriately. Practical and theory training will take place in one of our classrooms on the beach which will be your class HQ for the week.

The course will run for five consecutive days, from Monday to Friday. Monday to Thursday comprise of your training, Friday is the all-important assessment day

Monday 0900-1830 (1.5h Homework)

Tuesday 0900- 1830 (1.5h Homework)

Wednesday 0900-1830 (1.5h Homework)

Thursday 0800-1800 (Revision Evening)

Friday 0900 -1800 Exam

Depending upon the tides and conditions, you will have at least one water session each day. You will then be in a class room and on the beach covering first aid theory and practical scenarios, lifeguarding skills and beach theory.
