Course aims:
If you have a competent level of sewing skill and an interest in making garments and have done some pattern cutting yet feel you want to know how to make garments more professionally or draft more complex patterns, this is the course for you.
The course aims to show you how to draft a basic pattern and how this pattern can be adapted to your own design which will then be made into a garment to a competent level of skill.
Course content:
On this course you will learn about:
- sewing techniques including darts, seams, hems, zips, pockets, waistbands and facings
- more advanced garment construction techniques
- adapting a pattern into different styles
- producing your own pattern
- producing a final garment to a competent level of skill.
Facilities for students:
Sewing machines, pattern cutting studio, professional pattern Cutting tables, use of the college library (Learning Resource Centre).
Tutors:
Course Tutor, Phil Bint, also teaches Fashion and pattern cutting on the BTEC Foundation Diploma at City College. He is an experienced pattern cutter and has an in depth knowledge of pattern cutting and garment construction techniques. He has produced work for local theatre, designing and making garments for productions. Phil also exhibits in the Brighton Festival in the Open Houses.
Assessment: Course work will be assessed on a weekly basis and will also be assessed at the end of the course by an external examiner.

An interest in fashion and design is required as well as evidence that you have competent sewing skills and have sewn recently. Commitment and enthusiasm are also essential.

Progression and links:
The course alone will not guarantee progression into higher education, but the qualification will aid students wanting to apply to for HE or pattern cutting related jobs.
A previous student was given a job as a trainer for a local computer aided design company, Vetigraph, which specialises in supplying a CAD/CAM pattern cutting system for garment manufacturers and Fashion colleges in Britain.
Former students have gone onto various forms of employment for Reiss, London, Vetigraph, a pattern cutting technician and freelance work.
Work experience opportunities:
As a result of attending the NCFE Pattern Cutting Course two previous students have had work experience with Gresham Blake, a former student of City College who now owns a very successful bespoke tailor business in Brighton. The students organised their own work experience.

Below are the fees for 09/10.
Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 149
If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
