  - City & Guilds 6022 Domestic copper pipe installation
  - City & Guilds 6032 Domestic Sanitary ware installation
  - BPEC Water Regulations*
  - BPEC Unvented Hot Water*
  - Panda Plumbing Training Certificate

* These 2 certificates are not included in the cost of the course if the course is funded - in that case they need to be purchased separately.

Theory

During the course of your training you will be presented with the necessary theory to understand the range of ways water enters the domestic premises, can be stored, heated, used and finally removed from those premises.

The daunting thought is that this could be an awful lot to take in - don't worry you will have it presented to you in small, understandable, chunks allowing you to assimilate your learning.

Our theory tends to take place during the morning session leaving the rest of the day for practical application.

Topics Covered

Cold Water Supply -

This section explains how the water arrives at the household stop tap, is brought into the house, treated if necessary and stored for later use.

Hot Water Supply -

In this section we look at the various ways that the cold water arriving into the home is heated and stored. We look at a range of indirect systems and direct systems before moving on to unvented hot water systems.

Water Flow Controls -

This short section looks at a range of devices (often referred to as taps) which control the flow and direction of water in a domestic situation.

Waste Water Removal -

Here we look at the range of traps available and their suitability for use, together with pipe sizing for wastes from various appliances. An additional focus is on guttering and downpipes.

Central Heating -

Dry systems are touched upon but the main focus is on wet systems. In this section we look at the types of systems you are likely to encounter in a domestic situation, from one pipe to two pipe, micro-bore to small-bore; types of water heating methods; Y plan and S plan configuration: vented and unvented, together with the control systems used.

Water Regulations -

During the last week of the course you will recieve a 1/2 day presentation on the water regulations followed by a multiple choice, open-book examination. This should be a successful culmination to 3-4 weeks of self study from the study guide you are given at the beginning of the course.

Practical Activities

In our well equipped workshop you will be able to put your theoretical learning into practice.

At the start of your practical learning we will concentrate on the basic skills such as :-

  - Bending copper pipe using springs and machine
  - Cutting copper pipe
  - Joining copper pipe with:
  - Compression fittings
  - Yorkshire fittings
  - End feed fittings
  - Push fit fittings

-Initial assembly of :-

  - Wall hung vanity basin
  - Sink & Pedestal
  - Inset Vanity sink
  - Kitchen sink
  - Close coupled WC
  - Low Level WC
  - Dual flush WC
  - Standard bath
  - Wall hung radiators
  - Shower tray

Once you are more confident in your basic skills you are actively encouraged to undertake installation and decommissioning tasks, including:-

  - A full range of sinks / basins
  - A range of toilet styles
  - Baths
  - Gravity shower
  - Electric shower
  - Kitchen appliances
  - Central heating radiators and pipework
  - Airing cupboard (Tank & cylinder)
  - Outside tap

All installations are undertaken using live water and waste runs. Your work will be expected to be done in accordance to building regulations and water regulations, and to the quality of presentation standard you would expect in your own home!! In this way you will be sure to have positive comments from your customers - vital if you expect repeat work and recommendation.

We will also expect you to learn basic maintenance work such as:-

  - Tap repair
  - Tap replacement
  - Adding to existing pipework
  - Repairing leaks/drips/bursts
  - Curing blocked/noisy pipes
  - Draining down whole or part systems

It is inevitable that, despite our best efforts to cover all you need, we will miss issues that are important to you, so you are encouraged to ask!!
