Course programme

BA (Hons) Sport and Adventure Recreation
Mode: full-time

Although you are expected to engage with a range of theories, concepts and principles, the course also includes participation in adventure activities including sailing, windsurfing, hill walking, rock climbing, kayaking and canoeing.

The practical participation element culminates in a student-led expedition in the final stage. In recent years, students have been ski touring in Norway, canoeing in Hungary and Scotland, and walking and cycling in the Pyrenees. The course also includes a work placement that has proved a valuable learning experience, as well as opening up employment opportunities. Previous students have found that this enhances their career prospects on graduating as they can demonstrate to potential employers that they have the practical experience alongside the theoretical knowledge. All students receive help and advice on career options during the course.

This course combines the practical and theoretical elements of Adventure Recreation and examines how adventure fits into modern society. Students study sociological, philosophical and psychological concepts and theories in relation to adventure.

In addition to the practical element, students also have the opportunity to undertake courses alongside the course leading to national Governing Body awards.
