Year 1 - Candidates will complete a Level 3 90 Credit Diploma

Students will continue onto Year 2 if they have successfully completed Year 1. 

Year 2 - Candidates will continue into the second year to complete a Level 3 Extended Diploma

The aim of this programme is to develop your knowledge and experience of Sport and enable you to progress your skills in communication, problem solving, information technology and planning. The course focuses heavily on the development of sport (from participation level to elite performance), applied coaching principles, basic business principles and the fitness demands required for sports performance.

Students whose aim it is to be employed as a coach at “grass roots” level, sports development officer or work in a sport and fitness training environment. This qualification is equivalent to 3 A Levels and prepares students to go on to higher education or into the workplace.

What modules are covered?

Year 1

Principles of Anatomy & Physiology of Fitness
This unit explores the structure and function of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and how each responds to exercise. To complete the unit, each of the three energy systems are examined.

Assessing Risk in Sport
This unit develops your awareness of the importance of health and safety legislation, regulations and legal responsibilities of all those working in sporting situations.

Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
This unit will give you the skills and knowledge to safety and effectively select fitness tests, carry them out and give feedback to an individual.  You will also cover the need for and importance of medical screening.

Fitness Training and Programming
The aim of this unit is to give you the skills and knowledge to plan, monitor and evaluate a fitness training programme. The first part looks at fitness requirements of a range of sporting activities and the second part involves planning a fitness training programme for a selected individual.

Psychology for Sports Performance
This unit develops a sound theoretical base by examining important psychological factors such as personality, motivation, stress, arousal, anxiety and group dynamics. You will be able to plan psychological skills training programmes and individual session.

Sports Coaching
This unit will develop your own knowledge of coaching by investigating the work of recognised successful coaches and reflecting on the reasons and means of their success. You will examine the techniques and strategies that successful coaches apply. You will be able to plan, deliver and evaluate your own coaching performance.

Practical Sport Team
You will participate in a variety of team sports offered as part of the centre’s curriculum, as well as other sports offered in the wider community. It is expected that you will provide the evidence for this unit by selecting two sports in which you either excel or have a particular interest.

Exercise, Health & Lifestyle
This unit gives learners the knowledge and skills to assess the lifestyle of an individual, provide advice on lifestyle improvement and plan a health-related physical activity programme.

Instructing Physical Activity
The aim of this unit for learners to be able to design, plan, deliver and review exercise sessions which meet the needs of different client groups.

Year 2

Sports Leadership
This unit gives learners the knowledge and skills required to plan and lead sport or exercise activities; it also gives learners their first step into sports leadership. You will look at the psychological factors that are important in leading sports activities, including cohesion, personality, motivation and stress.

Sport Development
This unit will introduce you to sports development and the work of sports development officers. You will investigate different organisations involved in sports development and explore key concepts in sports development such as the sports development continuum, target groups, barriers to participation and cross-cutting agendas. 

Sports Injuries
This unit concentrates on the importance of injury prevention. You will look at the main factors that can lead to injuries occurring, or to a performer being predisposed to suffering an injury, and different methods used to minimise the risk.

Sport and Exercise Massage
This unit combines theory and practical knowledge necessary for you to study sport and exercise massage.  You will be encouraged to use anatomical terminology and be able to apply the knowledge in order to perform a safe and effective sport and exercise massage treatment, which may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

Current Issues in Sport
This unit examines how sport has evolved within British society.  You will study the scale, structure and organisation of the sports industry in the public, private and voluntary sectors.  This unit also covers the many cultural factors that influence participation and non participation sport.

Sport as a Business
This unit aims to give learners an insight into what makes a sports business successful. You will look first at the organisation of sports businesses. This will involve examining the different ways a business can be organised, and the structure and staff employed. You will then investigate a variety of sports businesses and enterprises, looking at what is required to achieve success in the market.

Physical Education/ Care of children and young people
The aim of this unit is to provide a basis of understanding for those intending to teach or instruct children and young people.

Organising Sports Events
In this unit, learners will explore, gain and develop the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to successfully plan and lead sports events. Learners will also evaluate the success of the event, the performance of the project team and the performance of individuals and their roles.

Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport
In this unit learners will examine the rules of a selected sport. The unit requires learners to understand the roles and responsibilities of all the officials who participate in a selected sport. Learners are also required to analyse the performance of officials in a selected sport, as well as officiate a selected sport themselves.

How will I be assessed?

Written assignments, presentations both poster and oral, and  end unit assessments are all assessment techniques used on this programme.  The programme is continuously assessed and equivalent to three A levels.  Each module carries three assessments which contribute to overall module grades at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

5 GCSEs at grade A* - C which must include English Language, preferably Grade C Mathematics or a minimum of Entry level 3 in Numeracy.
or 
A Level 2 First Diploma in Sport with a Merit profile over the range of modules studied (this should include evidence of some distinction level work) plus GCSE in English.

Students who have not attained GCSE Maths at Grade C or above on joining the course will be required to complete a Functional Skills Maths qualification and then full GCSE during their time at college .

A good school/college report containing evidence of attendance, good behaviour and attainment may also be asked for. A commitment to a sports team in a chosen sport, and/or experience of coaching an activity.

What else do I need to know?

Students must attend all aspects of the Study Programme, including Work Experience, non qualification sessions and enterprise weeks.

Additional Requirements:  Students who have not attained GCSE Maths at grade C or above on joining the course will be required to complete Functional Skills Maths qualifications during their first year at college. There will also be a requirement to take GCSE Maths in the second year.  Students may not be able to fully participate in some league games, due to GCSE study.  Students may choose to attend evening class at an alternative centre at their own cost.

Personal Learner Advisor sessions: All students receive full tutorial support, individual and group tutorials throughout the two year course. If you require extra support we can organise this for you through our Learning Support Centre.

Entrepreneurial Activities and Work Experience: Warwickshire College is committed to creating an Entrepreneurial College by creating work based opportunities within the industry. For example students will be organising community events, coaching local primary schools, participating in volunteering activities with National Governing Bodies, British Colleges Sport and other sporting groups. All of these activities will develop the students’ skills and experience for university or work progressions.

Additional Qualifications: Learners will also gain additional sports qualifications which will enhance their future employability prospects within the industry. In year one learners will take their Level 2 Sports Leaders Award or Level 1 Award in Coaching Football or Basketball. In year two learners study the Level 2 Multi-Skills Development in Sport qualification.

Sports Teams: All students get an opportunity to participate in a range of sports including: Football, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Badminton, Tennis, Basketball, Strength & Conditioning and additional activities such as Archery, Trampoline, Wheelchair Basketball etc.

There will be chances to represent the college in inter and intra college leagues and with British Colleges Sport. Elite performers may represent us at a higher competitive level and take part in a specialist training programme.  

Days of Attendance: Timetables will be between the hours of 9.30 am to 4.15 pm Monday to Friday based on college terms. The course is delivered over 4 days, with the fifth day being a study day.  Students are not normally expected to take holiday during term time. Lessons will be taught at our Henley in Arden Centre with access to a gym, sports science laboratory and extensive outdoor/indoor sport facilities.

Length of Course: 2 years full time

Learners aged 19 and over pay full fees.

Uniform: All clothing to be paid for by the learner. A College polo shirt is required for the course and is available to buy online.  The polo shirt will be required to be worn for specialist units.  Students attending this qualification must wear suitable sports and fitness wear for practical activity and must wear trainers.  In addition, for health and safety reasons and industry expectations, students will be expected to remove jewellery during exercise. Any facial peircings or earings will need to be taped over or removed during practical activity.  Students are permitted to wear studs in the ears.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

Sports Coaching, Sports Development, Health Related Fitness Appraisal, Sport and Recreation Management, Sports Management, Teaching Physical Education, The Armed Services, Sports Nutrition and Psychology are all possibilities. Some of these will require further study at degree level.

Degree or Foundation Degree at University or College. Warwickshire College offers a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching and an opportunity to top up to the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Performance.

NB Students who wish to undertake physiotherapy should consider if this pathway is suitable for the Higher Education Institution of their choice.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
