Frequent Asked Questions
Candidates must be 16 years or older at the time of the exam and have an interest in teaching swimming. You will need to have or attend an RLSS National Pool Lifeguard course or the National Rescue Award. In addition you are required to join the STA membership, which also covers you for insurance purposes.
The STA Swimming and Aquatic Teacher Training Qualification are linked together through the core knowledge contained in the Aquatic Teaching Foundation Unit. This course is a two module Level 2 Beginners and Full Swimming Teachers

The course comprises of theory sessions and practical sessions that cover how to teach swimming and how to demonstrate the different strokes and techniques for beginners, inprovers and strong swimmers. The theory subjects include anatomy and physiology and the teaching of individuals with learning difficulties. It also includes Health and Safety regulations and procedures in the swimming pool and the Child Protection act.
An internal assessment is undertaken by the tutor and covers worksheets, lesson plans, essays, multi choice questions and practical assessment. External assessment comprises of multi choice and essay questions and a practical examination.
In addition to tuition fees candidates must become members of the STA at a cost of £40
You are required to dress in appropriate clothing that will enable you to teach comfortably (shorts and T-shirt) and pool shoes. Please bring pen and paper with you. If you have any special requirements relating to the course, please inform the tutor or the course organiser prior to commencement of the course.
To attend STA Level 2 Full Teachers, candidates must be 18 years of age or older at the time of the exam and must be a member of the STA. Candidates must be in posession of a current RLSS National Pool Lifeguard Qualification or the Rescue Award.
