Stuart Church is currently a Researcher in the Joining Technology knowledge group at Corus RD&T Swinden Technology Centre. He has worked in the steel construction industry prior to attending university. After graduating in 1990 he has worked in Joining Technology in RD&T, and has a broad and practical knowledge in welding and its impact on steel plate and structural sections.

Course programme

This is a one day workshop aimed at people with little or no knowledge of welding or ferrous steel metallurgy. It will give descriptions of arc welding and the arc welding processes (including advanced processes) used for the joining of steel.

Some aspects of basic metallurgy and mechanical properties will be covered to enable the attendees to understand the affects of welding on the parent steel. Practical considerations of welding will be discussed as will common weld defects and what can be done to minimise them.

  • Welcome and Introductions.
  • Introduction to welding steel. The standards that steel is sold to and an explanation of test certificate information; composition, mechanical properties and condition.
  • The effect of arc welding on steels ‘as sold' conditions.
  • Metallurgy of welding; Heat Affected Zones (HAZ's).
  • Welding processes and advanced welding processes covering advantages/disadvantages.
  • Tour of Corus RD&T Welding Laboratory facilities with demonstrations of welding.
  • Hydrogen cracking.
  • Defects in welds and weld geometry.
