Course contents:

Planning:
• Assessment of Woodland
- this will include discussions of policy and objectives of management, taking into account influencing factors such as accessibility, shooting etc.
• Planning of work
- can it be carried out in one operation or does it need to be phased

Woodland Operations:

• Thinning - requirements for thinning operations and likely income from produce
- use of contractors
• Felling
- selective and clear felling
- values of various timber species
- methods of sale
• Coppicing
- coppicing requirements
- availability of suitable markets
- availability of suitable labour

Grants:
• Woodland Grant Scheme - covering planting grants, coppicing grants and woodland improvement grants
• Local Authority Grants - Covering hedge and amenity planting grants

Protection:
• Wildlife assessment
• Methods of protection against mammal damage, including rabbits, hares, deer and badger
